Are you Smarter than .........?

I apoligize if the last question was a little difficult. Since my class is working on Systems of Equations, here goes a nice word problem for you to try.

I'm not sure how you're instucting your students to go about solving this, but here's how I did it. Let me preface it by stating that back in the summer of '07 your boy was taking a Linear Algebra class (MAT 372, for those of you keeping score at home) where he learned about this wonderful thing called HSOLE (Homogeneous System Of Linear Equations). So indeed, I did set this up an HSOLE matrix and did the calculations by hand to get the answers of:
balls - $8
bats - $5.40
bases - $1.40
I did double check my answers using my TI-83 Plus calculator(which for some reason has an inscription of Deez Nutz on it).

P.S. How the fuck does Laredo Sports intend on staying in business if they're charging $8 for balls and only $5.40 for bats. Maybe they're CEO should take a business management course on-line @ Penn State!!!

Good point. I think they have the ratio going correctly in order to make some money. You figure in order, what is the most used piece in baseball? If baseballs cost more than bats and bases then they could make a ton of cash.
No, we don't use the HSOLE, in fact matrices have been cut out the Algebra II curriculum down here which is stupid. However, we are implementing a course called Financial Literacy that deals with students understanding Mortgage payments, fixed interest rates, and other mathematical topics that deal with real life. This course could be taken simultaneously or in place of Trig. I think our current economic status brought this about.
