Upset Saturday

What a day in college basketball yesterday! Upsets, great games, and another weekend where stars shined and teams looking to improve their resume for the NCAA tourney. Five of the top 25 teams in the nation were upset yesterday but none were bigger than #1 ranked North Carolina and #4 UCLA. Gary Williams and his Maryland squad beat the Tarheels to improve their record to 12-7 and handing the best team in the nation their first loss of the season. Williams now has beaten a #1 ranked team 7 times since 1997, an amazing statistic. Also, the highly anticipated Pac-10 game between freshmen studs O.J. Mayo and his USC Trojans verses Kevin Love and his UCLA Bruins was a must see game. To bad most of the nation wasn't able to enjoy it since CBS gave regional coverage to the Ohio State/Tennessee game. USC beat UCLA at Woodens Court 72-63 snapping the Bruins 9 game winning streak and putting a big stamp on their tournament credentials. Stealing the spotlight was another frosh who stole the show for the Trojans, Davon Jefferson scored a career high 25 points while Mayo finished with 16. Love had 18 points and 14 boards for the losers. Other upsets this weekend were Kansas State knocking off Texas A&M, Cincinnati beating Pittsburgh, and Auburn squeaking by Mississippi. But, this is what I have been looking for in college basketball this year, a little bit more parity between big time conference rivals. This season still has about a month and a half left before the conference tournaments and we still have two teams undefeated in Kansas and Memphis. Memphis is more than likely to run the table undefeated til the NCAA tourney, since Conference USA is pretty much a joke as far as I am concerned. My shock of late has been the great play of the Atlantic 10 conference, I heard Hubert Davis yesterday say that he thinks the A-10 will get 5 teams in the tourney. I don't really agree but we still have a lot of basketball to be played and it should be interesting going down the stretch. In case you were wondering on a different note, highly football and basketball recruit Terrelle Pryor was in attendance for the Michigan/Iowa game yesterday. The Wolverines of course lost and it looks to me that Pryor could ultimately start for the both basketball and football teams next season if he decides to commit to the Ann Arbor school. Enjoy the basketball coming up!

I think Kevin Love is a phenom in the college game. He is very similar to Psycho Ty. But my new favorite player is Nick Calathes at FLA. He's tough and smart. Donovan got a kid who was a two time Fla player of the year and had his choice to play anywhere. And he took over the game yesterday.
