Could Connecticut Take 3??!
Yes, that head line is correct. Yes, it is possible. And yes we all know UCONN is one of the teams, but there are two teams Connecticut may start dancing about and they're not Yale or CCSU or any other Blue colored school in CT. No, they both bare the color Red...The Sacred Heart Pioneers and the Hartford Hawks both earned births to their respective conference championship games on Sunday while in the process of having the opportunity to make their first Division 1 Men's Basketball Tournament birth.
The Pioneers will pack their home gym, The William Pitt gymnasium (the place where I dry heaved many mornings during footballl conditioning practice) on Wednesday Night at 7pm to be shown on ESPN2. Don't be confused with what ESPN says....they game will be in Fairfield. Look for Drew Shubik to play a huge role for the Pioneers after scoring 13 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and dishing out six assists to lead the #3 seeded Sacred Heart University men's basketball team to a 55-49 win over #2 seed Wagner College in the Northeast Conference semifinals. Sacred Heart also features 4 state of Connecticut players in sophomore Ryan Litke (Windsor, CT/Windsor)9.2 ppg., sophmore Chauncey Hardy (Middletown, CT/Xavier)10.2 ppg, red-shirt senior Luke Granato (Rocky Hill, CT/Northwest Catholic)6.2 ppg, and senior Gene Pettway (Bridgeport, CT/Harding)4.6 ppg. Among the notables not in attendence, SHU football's all-time leading scorer Tim Redican.
The Hartford Hawks look to capture the America East Championship and earn the automatic bid on Saturday 12:00 at UMBC. The Hawks escaped Boston University on Sunday to advance to the finals, their first ever. Hartford features New Britian, Ct. standout Brian Glowiak, 4.5 ppg. and Clint Kuban from Bethel. The game will be played at UMBC, which is the University of Maryland in Baltimore County.
